Kripalu Yoga

The core focus of Kripalu yoga is to cultivate Witness Consciousness, which means developing a nonjudgmental awareness of our thoughts, feelings, and experiences. This awareness helps us find inner stillness, not only on the mat during practice and meditation but also in daily life, especially amidst challenges.

As your ability to observe without judgment grows, so does your capacity to respond more consciously to your emotions and thoughts, rather than reacting impulsively.

Through yoga, you have the opportunity to connect with your true nature. By intentionally positioning your body in a yoga form, guiding your breath, and directing your focus, you learn to channel your will more skillfully. This process opens the door to deeper states of receptivity and openness, allowing you to experience greater clarity and presence.

This is the heart of Kripalu yoga.

Sutra 1.1
Atha Yoga Nushasanam
Now the inquiry of yoga

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

The practice begins with dynamic, warming movements that help you connect more deeply with your body. As you move, you begin to link breath and movement, cultivating greater body awareness.

Sutra 1.2
Yoga Citta Vritti Nirodaha
Yoga is mindfully directing awareness of perceptions, thoughts, and feelings

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

As the practice progresses, you move through each yoga form with the opportunity to transcend physical sensations. You’ll start to notice your thoughts, emotions, and breath, allowing these layers of consciousness to surface and be observed without attachment.

Sutra 1.3
Tada Drastuh Svarupe Vasthanam
Then consciousness abides in its true nature

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

This stage invites you to instinctually honor your body’s wisdom, exploring yoga forms with spontaneity and ease. By embodying Witness Consciousness, you liberate yourself from worrying about how you look or how you might be perceived by others. The practice becomes meditation in motion, flowing with presence and awareness.

Sutra 2.46
Sthira Sukham Asanam
May the posture be steady and comfortable

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
